Two broadcast premieres highlight this week's Radio Eclectus: Robert Moran’s 40-minute Buddha goes to Bayreuth, for 2 choruses and string orchestras, performed in the reverberant interior of a former natural gasworks in Germany (and not available online anywhere else!), and Michael Pisaro-Liu’s Tai Pi (泰否), wherein an amphibian night conjures up Schubertean recollections. These gripping works are introduced by briefer testimonials from Stephen O'Malley and Elainie Lillios respectively. Two hours of chill music for the open-eared.
Plus one hour of new CDs that just can't wait: Frank Zappa on the road with The Mothers (in some just-released 1970 tour tapes), David Lang revisiting Fidelio (recorded last year at Lincoln Center), Kirill Gerstein playing Adès, Sharon Isbin playing Tan Dun, and an unusual piano+field recordings work by Malaysian composer Chong Kee Yong. Short tracks from Tim Daisy, Sir Richard Bishop, Synalegg and Aaron Turner round out the playlist. Radical new music!
