The Phunkia club night ran from 1998 – 2001 at The Room nightclub Hull, UK and came about after I moved my weekly Thursday club night ‘Superstition’ from the New Silhouette Club on Park Street in Hull to the upstairs lounge of the Room on Wednesday nights.
Now the time line is hazy – Satisfaction was probably at ROOM in late 1997 with it changing to Phunkia in Jan 1998…an instant success it was not. There was however a core crowd of maybe 20 – 30 regulars in the small lounge who came every week after a while and loved the music. I cannot remember what was downstairs on Wednesday but I was not attracting many people who also liked what Phunkia was trying to do upstairs. A better fit was the Tuesday crowd for legendary Indie night ‘ Helter Skelter’ which had also left Silhouettes after their change of music policy. The management agreed and the move was made…which is when things got messy…
