Second Life, United States

I’ve been DJing in Second Life almost nonstop since 2006. In real life, I first played for a crowd in the late ’80s, but life pulled me away from the decks for a long while. When Second Life exploded in popularity, curiosity drew me in. I made an avatar just to look around—and the creativity and musical energy hooked me instantly. I wanted to be part of it.

Everything was digital, streamed into virtual clubs. I knew vinyl, but this was a complete reset. Early digital DJs were often dismissed for not using “real” gear, and getting a club slot was tough. The music landscape had changed too: countless new EDM styles, no record stores, and controllers replacing turntables.

I experimented everywhere, tried many genres, and eventually chose to rebuild from zero with a clear identity and a focused sound.

Funky house, Afro house, soulful house, and nu‑disco.

That’s when DJ Kaarunya was born.
