Erich Zann is a HP Lovecraft character.
He was a mad violinist playing strange music out his window late into the night. Mystifying the protagonist.
It is learned later in the story that Erich Zann is playing music for a malicious cosmic entity. An entity so great and powerful that if it were not for the mad playing of Erich it would snuff out this world.

You never know who is listening...
