Before Brit-funk blew up around the turn of the 80s, there were various groups dotted across the UK making funk and funk-rooted soul, jazz-rock and R&B, most of which rarely gets mentioned beyond a few key acts like Cymande and the funkier end of The Equals' output.
Following a DJ set at the launch of the Cymande documentary Getting It Back where I played a load of UK records from the time of their early albums, and inspired by guitarist Patrick Patterson telling me how much he loved Jethro Tull, I hit record and mixed up a load of afro-funk, soul and jazz-rock by the likes of Batti Mamzelle, Marsha Hunt, Ram John Holder, Danta and of course Cymande. For the last year it has only been available for paid subscribers on my Substack page 'Dubstack' so I figured it was time to share it with the rest of the world on here.

So happy to hear this, I often think of the gigs I’ve missed with regret, and this is at the top of my list!
