It may come as a surprise to some, but back in the 70’s Japan had thriving disco and soul scenes. Then in the 80’s came the growth of “City Pop”, a uniquely Japanese sound with a funky, soulful edge. With no internet back then, the thriving scene in Japan was largely hidden from the rest of the world, but this classic Japanese music deserves to be heard and appreciated by music fans worldwide. This set is made up of music I dug out from record shops in Tokyo a few years back. Getting underway with some funky soul, before moving into uptempo disco & boogie as the set progresses. I've become an avid collector of Japanese music for many years now, but this set may be a journey of discovery for those who are not familiar with Japanese music. I can't believe it's taken me so long to pick up on this Steve! Really nice to hear something new on the ears! A big change to what we've all become a custom to here on the cloud! You've certainly done your research on your travels, which would make it very worth while to you I'm sure! Lovely transitions during each and every mix, you took some time to compile this, that I can certainly hear! I kept my mind open on this and I'm pleased I took the time to listen to what this part of the world was producing during that time, as it's not a sound that has ever been pushed in my corner of the world. Haha no worries!! ... Simply not possible to listen to everything on Mixcloud, but I'm glad you had chance to check this one out!! ... I picked up most of these while digging through the shops in Tokyo a few years back, and I was completely blown away by a lot of the Japanese music I was finding ... Just incredible how much fantastic soul, funk, jazz and disco was produced in Japan back in the 70's and 80's, and to this day, most of it is still largely unknown to the outside world ... Although that's slowly changing, thanks to the internet ... But yes you're right, it's a rabbit hole of musical discovery, and plenty of research and digging went into assembling the ingredients for this set!! ... But when people enjoy hearing something different, I think it makes it all worthwhile ... Mixcloud is saturated with house, hip hop and R&B, and while we all enjoy those sets, I love going off the beaten path, and bringing something a little bit different ... I'm glad you enjoyed discovering these hidden Japanese gems, and many thanks for tuning in!!! 👊😎🎧🎵
Hey Steve, thanks for going to all the time and effort to put these sets out. I think its enriching to hear different music, and whilst this genre isn't my favourite of the eastern ones you have done, I can appreciate the tracks (quite liked a few e.g. Route 246), and how much research it would have taken you to put this together. As a soul music lover I found this so intriguing, no idea that this soulful/funky/disco sound existed! Just brilliant again Stevo - every session is an education and a testament to the hard work, research and skill required to manifest these fantastic sessions. Brother James, had a chance to press Play on this special show tonight after work and still processing what I heard. Quirky, odd, unusual, and certainly extraordinary. Not really sure how to describe the experience other than it was a new one for me. Yet another flex of your always impressive musical muscles. Your range runs the gamut from underground Hip Hop to one extreme, and I'd say this kitschy Japanese Funk and Pop on the other ... and literally everything in between. While it was not necessarily in my comfort zone, I absolutely appreciate where it took me, and the experience of something completely new to my ears. A rarity indeed ... and in culinary terms, a delicacy. Big up and have a great weekend bro. ❤️👊
