Flashback - Summer 2000

Avatar

The year 2000 was another big year for trance music, following the commercial success of the genre in 1999. Let's go back exactly 20 years and enjoy some of the old classics from the summer of 2000. Featuring productions from the legends Ferry Corsten, Matt Darey, Lange and DJ Tiesto. Compiled and mixed by yours truly, Steve James.

Great set Steve, you really nailed it with this one!! So many memories created to these choons man, I have many of these on vinyl lying around the house somewhere. I wont lie tho, there were a few remixes I haven't heard before on here. That Tiesto remix of "Silence" was one, I have this song and no doubt this remix is on there but it's just not the one I used to play. It's always nice to find other remixes of my favourite tracks. And of course the vocals on it are just great, I think it's Sarah McLachlan if I'm remembering correctly. And "On The Beach" from York is another anthem, what a remix by CRW that was. I was a massive fan of Mauro Picotto back then, anything from him I was buying up without even listening. There's not too many artists I do that with these days that's for sure!! This was a great ride through memory lane, hearing many of my favourites brought back to life, and many more I hadn't heard since those days and forgot all about even, thanks for reminding me!! I'm tempted to do a mix like this myself but it's just such a mission going through all my vinyl and finding these choons again. One day, for sure!!

Thanks mate! ... I appreciate you taking the time to check this one out, as it's one from "the archives" ... These tunes are full of memories, and it was a fantastic time for trance at the turn of the millennium ... the late 90's and early 2000's were great for dance music in general. A time when we were blessed with some of the finest French house, UK Garage, trance and drum & bass ... and some great chillout and trip hop as well ... They were great times! ... The Tiesto mix of "Silence" was a huge tune at the time. I remember it being on all the big trance compilations in summer 2000 ... and Pete Tong and Judge Jules were battering it to death on Radio 1. Haha ...... But it was one of those tunes that had a whole load of different versions. The Airscape mix was also huge at the time ...... It was indeed Sarah McLachlan on vocals ... She did another trance track with Delerium in 2001, but it was a much slower tempo, and it wasn't as popular as "Silence" ...... York's "On The Beach" is one of those timeless classics that I remember being all over the radio in summer 2000 ... York were also famous for their '99 Ibiza anthem "The Awakening" ...... Mauro Picotto made some incredible tunes back in the day. "Lizard" was a favourite of mine, and it was huge in '99 ... Much like you, I can say there are not too many artists these days that tempt me to buy every single release ... Trance started to really go downhill in 2002, and by 2004 all the magic had gone ... just a handful of great tunes here and there, but different to the late 90's / early 2000's, when there would be so many quality releases every week that you'd be able to make a great trance set just from that week's new releases ... nowadays I can sit through a hundred trance tracks and only find one or two that really capture me ... I think that's where trance went wrong. It lost the emotion ... those melodies that give you goosebumps ... Most of the modern trance is a little too cheesy for my liking, but at least we can still go back to the claasic era when we need some great trance!!! Thanks again for checking out the mix bro, and I'm glad it brought back some great memories ... I will be doing a mix of trance from 1999 at some point ... After all, 1999 was widely known as "the year of trance" !!!! ... Have a great week mate 😎🎧🎵
