When I was in my late teens (late 80's) my mates and I would listen to dance music on analog tapes, there were no dance nights in any of the clubs back then and most DJ's where I live wouldn't play the 'new dance music' as it was then. You might hear a dance track that had made it into the charts now and again played by a DJ at a pub or a club, but no underground dance music.
My mates started to DJ playing only dance music and organising party's and so I got involved in helping them. Some time later I started to mix vinyl (or try anyway :) ). I stopped buying vinyl in 1996 and have a collection of about 700 12's, I also own in the region of 600 Cd's (albums). I have varied music tastes and a music collection that confirms this.
