About the show
Playing tracks by
Ray Brown Trio, Cedar Walton, Tommy Flanagan, David Benoit, Cyrus Chestnut and more.
Here are some very interesting jazz takes on many of your holiday favorites.
Many of the tunes on this mix came from "A Jazz Piano Christmas" - a CD produced by NPR in 2000 that had not a single bad cut on it. Unfortunately it's out of print and unavailable as MP3s. If you can find the CD for a reasonable price, buy it!
Dick Hyman's "Deck The Halls" is a pianist's tour-de-force. Ellis Marsalis does a very wistful turn on "Christmas Time Is Here". You can see the strings of city lights when Dave McKenna plays one of my all-time favorites, "Silver Bells". I had to listen to dozens of versions of "Carol Of The Bells" to decide that David Benoit's is unquestionably my favorite. You'll only have to listen once.

This Christmas mix is for Aunt Mary. Her irrepressibly positive life-force was perhaps best expressed when she chose to play the piano.
