Here is the big, FAT sound of superlative Holiday recordings from big bands. What do I mean by "fat"? Kinda hard to pin down but here are a few attempts I googled:
"FAT is a big warm sound such as smooth full bottom end and a high end rolloff with some punch."
"It connotes a thickness or a real musicality to the low mids and the high lows, delivered with a sheen."
"It has more to with harmonic richness......It adds apparent thickness without actually adding more low frequency content."
These are all modern (>2000) recordings with the exception of Ella, Peggy Lee, and The Duke. The Glenn Miller Orchestra was still recording under his name in 1988 for "Frosty The Snowman". And "Sleigh Ride" by the Count Basie Orchestra was captured just five years ago on an excellent LP titled 'A Very Swingin' Basie Christmas!".
