Muzak is actually a brand and the music they made was specifically designed to create certain head states. Quite the opposite of chill, nowadays i't's recognised as a study/productivity tool. For me it conjures up a lot of imagery and I got into 'Trip Hop' as we referenced it back in the mid 1990's through labels such as Mo Wax and NInjatune as well as everything coming out of Bristol. I called the mix (Strictly No dancing) as I remember trying (unsuccessfully) to dance to a Portishead track dropped by Gilles Peterson at the Ministry of Sound. Of course some of it is very funky and the 'genre' is extremely broad. In this mix there is music from one year ago and twenty five years ago which demonstrates it's longevity, occupying a narrow niche but informing other styles whilst continuing to evolve, evoke and impart a very distinctive but mysterious vibe.
