The greatest moments in a largely predictable music business are when you're blown away by a release you expected nothing from, recorded by an artist you have never heard of before.
Listening to Aeromaschine's recent 'Basement Dubs EP' for Hamburg's Baalsaal imprint was such a moment. Played out loud in our office, its five tracks turned heads across the room, and dutiful answers as to what we were listening to were met with more then one incredulous "what, this one too?".
The EP combines dub techno, deep house, Chicago and Detroit in a way that would make any veteran producer proud.
Yet, the man behind 'Basement Dubs' is a young artist from Bucharest, Romania: Alin Crihan, as he's known to his friends, started releasing his first productions around 2007 on a number of digital labels, gradually refining his sound until he devised his Aeromaschine alias in 2009.
