Alongside classic library music, you’ll hear songs that were composed specifically for these films — including works like Patrick Joseph Cowley’s pulsating scores for gay cinema. There’s often little known about the producers, composers, or musicians behind the tracks — many of them did this work simply to pay the bills, not to build a name for themselves. At the time, being associated with adult films was anything but prestigious.
And yet, numerous well-known musicians contributed to the sound of this era: Frank Zappa, Michael Bloomfield, Rupert Holmes, and others earned extra money by producing, composing, or playing as sidemen on adult movie soundtracks.
