This is a mix of soul songs produced by J Dilla. As a DJ I’m always interesting in how good hip hop producers interpret and give flavor to R&B songs. And, of course, I love J Dilla’s music production. So, because these days as an old DJ I’m mainly interested in hearing and collecting and spinning good music, I just did this mix of J Dilla produced soul tracks for fun. This mix is not exhaustive. I left off a couple songs because they were just too ridiculously slow (like Something for the People’s “All I do”) or ridiculously fast (like The Brand New Heavies’ “Saturday Night”). I also left off a couple of Erykah Badu’s and Amp Fiddler’s Dilla-produced tracks, in part for vibe and just having a hard time fitting them in. Some of the production is credited with The Ummah (the crew of Dilla, Q-Tip, & Ali Shaheed Muhammed), but most is Dilla’s solo production.
