The piano has been an integral part of the jazz since back in the day - whether solo or part of a band. The piano's role in jazz music is multifaceted mainly due to the instrument's combined melodic and harmonic capabilities. From Thelonious Monk to Jason Moran the piano has been the rock that jazz has been built on. Not as sexy and upfront as the sax perhaps, but it holds it own in anything from be-bop to hip-hop.
End of music lesson - enjoy the vibe.
