Let's be straight upfront - I'm not a musicologist. So you may disagree with some of my choices arguing that they are not truly modal. And, you may be correct. This mix is my personal take on modal jazz - in spirit, if not definition. For those of you not familiar with modal jazz, this is what Wikipedia says:
"Modal jazz is jazz that uses musical modes rather than chord progressions as a harmonic framework. Originating in the late 1950s and 1960s, modal jazz is epitomized by Miles Davis's "Milestones" (1958), Kind of Blue (1959), and John Coltrane's classic quartet from 1960–64.[2] Other important performers include Woody Shaw, Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, McCoy Tyner, Larry Young, Pharoah Sanders, Joe Henderson, Chick Corea and Bobby Hutcherson."

Thanks Duffy
Cool tunes. Some of my favorites (Herbie, Wayne, Woody, Joe & Bu). Not all modal technically, but modal in spirit. Well done! Cheers, DrJ
Thanks Dr. J - Those cats are the foundation for me! Put in the Wayne Shorter because his current output is being dissed a lot lately. Everyone's a critic! I love the dude...
Agreed, here. I have looks of Shorter. But frankly, I've been listening to the latest BN release for at least two months. I 'get it', but it doesn't sing to me the way the old BNs and work with Miles does. Anyway, thank goodness he's still alive to set the bar high for all the young wanna be 'geniuses'. Cheers, DrJ
I reckon the new Shorter album is more ECM than Blue Note! But that's not a bad thing.
