Indeed one for me like you say. At least I have five of these tunes/versions in my own collection. The opening track I knew by Grant Green. "Green Is Beautiful" was my first GG album and I bought it for the cover version of "Ain't It Funky Now". John Patton's album with Tommy Turrentine, George Braithwaite, Grant Green and Ben Dixon is truly amazing, too! And I always loved the artwork of that LP in particular. BTW Fred Wesley is guesting on track 11. I once gave him a copy and he asked: "What's that?". I said: "A James Taylor compilation you play on." A pretty balanced Fred in reply: "Ah yeah? Okay."
Idris Muhammad actually played drums on the Grant Green version! The Idris version is from a 1990 German release: “My Turn”. Fred Wesley has played on so many sessions he’s probably forgotten most of them! Had the pleasure of seeing Fred Wesley and Maceo Parker with George Clinton at the Hacienda in Manchester. They played for four hours straight - amazing gig!
Good thing you put Fire Eater towards the end; after Rusty, there's hardly anything that can be said. Whew! Dinner music at Chez Jazz Sat. night! Yowsa...........!!
