In the post bop era a new kind of jazz emerged, champion by young turks such as Ornate Coleman and Don Cherry. They found bop’s harmonic and rhythmic conventions limiting and cut themselves free of the constraints of the past forms. This was what was known as “free jazz”. It was a reflection of the turbulent social fabric of the sixties. Nowadays, free jazz no longer has the ability to shock as it had at it’s inception. T S Elliot famously pointed out that: no artist can work outside the tradition because the tradition will stretch to accommodate anything artists do. Free techniques such a overblowing the saxophone have now been integrated into the mainstream. This mix focusing on a number of artists associated with free playing. It’s not all anarchy, I have leavened the mix with some more melodic fare, so set your mind free and prepare for a bumpy ride!

Deep and transporting stuff mate, glad I was in for the ride but gee there was some tough corners but they were always followed by sweeping bends.
Just like riding a motorcycle mate, the tight twisties are the most challenging bit, but ultimately the most rewarding if you get them right.
Heavy and very educational mix. Super brilliant. Thank you
Thanks for checking this out. Perhaps see you at Jazz Club?
Yes, I am definitely there this Sunday. See you later.
A real pleasure listening to this superb session. Educational as well. Old and New Dreams quartet... impressive stuff. I loved Song Out of My Trees. Who plays the guitar?
Thanks for listening Magda. The guitarist playing on the track is Ed Cherry, perhaps best know for his association with Dizzy Gillespie.
Brilliant mix Tony !!! Great choice of tracks !
Thanks Max, I didn’t think this mix would be too popular on Mixcloud as there are some heavyweight tracks that require listening commitment. I kinda eased people into it at the start, then dropped some more challenging music. As always, thanks for your support - it means a lot.
Quite heavy on a Saturday morning, but I listened thoroughly! Thanks for the tunes Tony! D.d'. :=
