Cool jazz emerged in the late 1940s as a calmer alternative to the fiery speed of bebop. Instead of aggressive solos and dense rhythms, it favored relaxed tempos, lighter tones, careful arrangements, and a sense of space. Musicians often played with restraint, letting melodies breathe and harmonies unfold gradually. The style is closely linked to Miles Davis, especially the sessions later collected as *Birth of the Cool*, which featured unusual instrumentation and sophisticated ensemble writing. Other important figures include Gerry Mulligan, Chet Baker, Lee Konitz, Lennie Tristano, Stan Getz, Dave Brubeck, Paul Desmond, and the Modern Jazz Quartet. Cool jazz became especially associated with the West Coast scene in the 1950s, though it was never limited to one region.
