Afro-Funk or Afrobeat, I reckon the terms the terms pretty much interchangeable (Correct me if I'm wrong). Anyway, the received wisdom is that afrobeat was devised by Fela Kuti. It's a bit more complicated than that. Fela himself was influenced by other African artist such as Geraldo Pino, the funk of James Brown and the jazz of Miles Davis and John Coltrane. No doubt Fela was a huge influence, his late sixties and early seventies albums are classics. Check out the 69 Los Angeles Sessions - well worth a listen. This mix don't actually feature any Fela, but his fingerprints are all over it. The tracks featured concentrate of 21st century Afro-Funk from bands in the USA, Europe and Africa. A modern take on Fela's legacy. Turn up the volume, make a space and dance!
