Time and timing. Last Step (Winnepeg's Venetian Snares) plays with odd meters here. The Balinese Gamelan constantly shifts in tempo and sweeps you along on its wavering trance. Reich's Drumming plays with the beat's emphasis and similarly takes you on a strange rhythmic voyage. Drummer Max Roach was a pioneer of unusual timing in jazz and has a great choir blasting through It's Time. Monk's piano style is distinctive for idiosyncratic harmony but also timing - deliciously stodgy and unpredictable. Clark Terry jumps in on trumpet, Roach again drums up a storm, with a tympani or two as well.
