Really enjoyed that. Signal Quest and Maddie Prior were favourites, and I never get tired of Starless and Bible Black, but the whole set worked as one long, involving piece in its own right.
Liked the way that the balance shifted around between "real" instruments and voices, processed instruments, and pure electronics.
Did you get to see Foat/Masin at King's Place?
Thanks J, really appreciate your feedback and very pleased you enjoyed it. I was at the Foat/Mason gig last Friday, thought it was excellent. Particularly enjoyed Mosus Boyd. Thought the seating was a bit mean considering it’s a fairly new venue, numb bum by the time they finished their encore. Were you there?
I don't mind the Kings Place seating but perhaps my arse is more fulsomely padded than yours! I like it as a venue. The sound and the sight lines have always been decent on my visits, and I like the way that it looks. They programme some really interesting artists as well. It's not that long since we were up there for a one-off Zoe Rahman octet gig. And I see Lord Of The Isles will be there in March.
We were there for the Foat/Masin gig, about five rows from the front on the right. Loved it. I thought it was a great idea to have an unaccompanied solo feature for each musician, helped to break up a music that was all about mood and vibe and layering for a live context. And it gave Daniel Casimir and Moses Boyd a chance to shine. Wasn't Moses Boyd's solo great? So much tension and release but he held it right down to fit with the evening's mood, the opposite of grandstanding.
