Audio ANTS of North Tawton presents a play written by John Palmer and recorded remotely during lockdown 3 in early 2021.
ANTS is an amateur dramatic society based in North Tawton, Devon. During the Covid lockdowns of 2020/2021 they kept up their love of acting by group-reading plays via Zoom. One member, John Palmer, wondered if was realistic to record some of the readings and invited Geoff Hodgkinson of Johns Park Studio to test the theory. Audio ANTS was born! A technique emerged whereby actors, sitting in their own homes, would interact with each other via Zoom on one device wearing headphones, while recording their contribution on a second device. That recording was then sent to Geoff, who compiled the individual pieces into a coherent whole. Technical challenges included home acoustics, unexpected interruptions and breakdowns so, as backup, Geoff separately recorded the Zoom conversations in his studio, ensuring a choice of audio tracks was available.
