Musical Starstreams originated and first aired in San Francisco on December 20th, 1981. Ronald Reagan had been President for just eleven months, interest rates were in the double digits and musical recordings were still sourced from vinyl, open reels and cassettes. There were no CDs yet!
This was our first ever broadcast heard only in the San Francisco Bay area. Although Forest actually uses the name Starstreams in the intro of the first set, he called it 'Music For Your Innerspace.' Musical Starstreams did not become the official name for the first time until April 25th of 1982
Forest did this show to see if people might be interested in this music on KTIM. There was no thought of creating a program for syndication. It was just to gauge interest. The phones at the station lit up that day. Lots of listeners sent mail supporting the show. The response was so great it became a regular offering on Sundays and then additionally on Weds nights!

Many thanks. Much appreciated.
Radio music history. Thanks for sharing, Forrest!
Thank you for listening!
Forrest! This is solid gold! Thank you so much. Starstreams has been essential listening for me since I discovered it in 2000.
The next one is even more interesting, the first show when I used Musical Starstreams on 25 Apr 1982. I will have it posted soon!
Cool to be able to listen to the first Musical Starstreams program. Before it was "Musical Starstreams". Listen to the program when station WNUA was around in Chicago in about 1990/91. Glad I'm able to still listen to the program over the internet.
Thanks for your kind words and support all these years!
That was fun! I especially like the local ads, believe it or not. I still have an mp3 of the 20th anniversary show, so this takes me back several ways!
I've just found and converted the Apr 25, 1982 KTIM broadcast and will be sharing it soon. It was the first ever show where I used 'Musical Starstreams' as the official name of the program. There are also some fun KTIM drops and local ads I've kept in.
@starstreams_hosted I do hope you can find and post more of your 80s shows. I audio cassette taped my favorite episode with my favorite new age song back in 1982 or 1983 I believe. I played that tape so many time it broke. I have been on a quest to discover the name of that song ever since. I spent hours at Oberon in SF listening to CDs, never found it. You are my only hope. 🙂
Rubbing my hands together, o boy. oh boy
Driving cross country, I was a trucker, searching dials for Starstreams, once I had found it/you, Forest with one R!😁
Over the years I've had truckers message me and say they were so mesmerized by listening to the music that they missed their freeway exit, or that hours on the road seemed to pass by like minutes. I always loved hearing that!
This history is fascinating. I listened to the show on WNUA, 95.5 Chicago, back in the day. With choices as good as this, it's no wonder it was popular. The concept of 'music for my innerspace' was most appealing.
Thanks very much Kevin!
