A somewhat experimental 70 minutes this one but it turned out very jolly. In previous mixes I’ve attempted to pitch/key match certain tracks together (the ambient equivalent of beat matching rhythmically driven tracks). Here though I decided to key match the entire mix and all of the tracks featured are in the time-honoured melancholic key of A minor. Such key matching allows for seamlessly l-o-o-o-o-ng transitions and the mix gently ebbs and flows through different ambient and ambient-esque genres in a kind of mixological analogue of Terry Reilly’s seminal (and pretty lengthy) piece “In C”. The music itself ranges through classic ambient (Brian Eno, Harold Budd, Robert Rich, Rapoon) to ambient classical (Nest, Deaf Center, Johann Johannsson) to a brief flirtation with dub techno (Murcof) to proper classical (Arvo Part) to digital experimentalists (Stephan Mathieu, Tim Hecker), as well as one of my own compositions, with A minor being the central thread from which all grows.
