Study of Self-coincidence, by mason gates
a bird-neck resets
on a clean window.
this is how i learned my sister was dead
swallowing an alive hummingbird heart
with lopsided portions of giggle
and cream.
the edge of a pond of sand
has no border, thursday continues
forgetting dark matter,
a trash hole opens in front a path
she lumbers,
eyes float behind parabola and snowfall
taste gunsmoke but no specter
no animal.
she is particles.
an atom is a particle.
a tumor is a collection of them.
she is not the atomic particles of her cheek left unzipped.
(keep seeing you
couch-wrested,
becrowned on Driveway Ave.
i keep you a note
thumbtacked to a blanched
door frame.
you latchkey,
washer of bowls
catching oak-smoke with your hair,
the easement,
a layabouts’ moat.
you are some red-breasted, avian thing.)
what combination of images excuses the study of fire?
how do you get
soft eyes?
(how can i come across
you wading in pond-surf,
you there behind the lash
and easement edging out
the tan soil,
the water a specific weirdness?)
