rethinking HELL

"I just couldn't believe in a God who would send people to hell." A lot of people feel this way. Even Christians are embarrassed or bothered by the Bible's teaching on hell. Why would a loving God do something like that?

What comes to mind when you think about hell? Pitchforks? Cartoonish red imps with horns, tails, and bat-wings? People screaming as they burn in a bog of liquid fire? What if we have it all wrong? Maybe hell is not what we have been taught in our collective cultural conscience. Maybe we shouldn't jettison beliefs about God based on misconceptions about hell. Maybe we need to rethink it.

Hell isn't about fear, guilt, or pain. It is about progress. It is about renewal. It is about the flourishing of peace, unity, and love on the earth. I know that these are not words that we ever hear associated with hell, but in the Bible, achieving these beneficial goals are the reason that hell exists.
