About Insect Repellents

Hello, I'm the OUTDOOR PROFESSOR from Discovering the Outdoors.
Here's your outdoor tip on Insect Repellents
For every person on earth, there are more than 170 million insects-and it may seem like sometimes they are all in your backyard at once.  Insects can be irritating, but also they may be dangerous causing disease and serious illness.  Insect bites are puncture wounds or lacerations that insects make to feed or defend themselves.  In most cases a type of formic acid is injected into the wound causing a reaction including swelling, pain, redness, or itching.
Here some basic advice regarding insect repellent:
1.  Start by following label instructions.  The label tells you conditions under which the product has been tested, targeted insects, and possible dangers to the skin or lungs.
2.  Longest protection is usually provided by repellents with synthesized chemical ingredients such as DEET, but many people prefer a natural repellent that will need to be reapplied more oft
