Night Drive

I drive with apathetic abandon, through terminally bright highways and byways, the rainbow flashes of neon everywhere, and the ruby glint of tail lights assailing me like a prismatic locust plague. I feel an abiding paranoia, an unnerving queasiness, knowing that we do not have anyone on earth strong enough to reverse the curse and its dire repercussions. I turn the stereo up higher, feasting my ears on brave electronic tapestries that please and satiate the soul. Music is the only elixir that offers the solace I crave. I put the car in fifth gear and accelerate past the sundry drivers sharing the late night avenues of bitumen. I drink a shot of fireball hastily, the vibrant imbibe offering a sudden heat and cinnamon infusion to my palette. I quote an old sonnet in a mumbled voice as I exceed 130 kph. I pause to reinvent my assertion; music and speed are the two experiences that would render peace and numb the ache of a universe gone so breathtakingly awry...
