For some time, I’ve avoided doomscrolling by getting my constant input fix from random Wikipedia articles, usually via Wikiroulette. I learn a lot about the beauty and diversity of our world, and am often surprised by how musical links I find.
And, my creative juices have been low lately, so I wanted an algorithm to choose and order sounds, hence this show as an experiment. I repeatedly hit ‘next’ on Wikiroulette, and each time found a sound to add to the mix’s end. If there was a clear link to music from the Wiki entry, I went with that. Otherwise, I turned my brain off, and simply grabbed some interesting audio from the first few search results for an entry. I only skipped a couple of entries, because they were real downers.
I quite like the result - a bit like flipping through snippets of sound on a magical worldwide radio, with my brain making surprising connections among tracks, despite the randomness.

Wow, that was quite a journey through various musical themes, punctuated by interesting snippets of dialogue.
It reminded me a bit of the 90s, when I used to watch MTV music videos over and over again. I remember how annoying I always found the commercials and then flipping back and forth between other channels and MTV until the next music video finally came on. So this soundscape reminded me a bit of those days. 😁
And besides, man, I hadn't thought about Jackie Chan's "Drunken Master" in a long time. Such a masterpiece. 😅

Ha, Drunken Master was always my favorite old-school kung fu movie, so I was tickled when “Drunken Boxing” popped up as my next prompt on wikiroulette, and I knew immediately what I wanted to use for my soundbite. I was definitely going for that flipping channels vibe with this one! Though, I was often surprised by connections among the random entries. Thanks for listening!

yes I'm back and dude this was friggin PERFECT!!! Every minute of this is gold! I kept thinking how I wish analog radio was as good as online radio and you can just sit there turning the dial while making coffee in the morning (I usually just listen to our national broadcaster CBC) this is exactly what I wish I'd hear. It's like being in a foreign country that doesn't have shit all over their radio. I've been planning a special theme taking part over a few months on my monthly punk show about traveling the world, but I just don't have the patience you do to put together something like this 😫

I’m glad you liked it so much - I was partially inspired by our convo about how enjoyed snippets of sound from all over the place, and I did want it to have that “flipping through stations” vibe. I also wish terrestrials radios (to use Squirrelly Dan’s terminology) was more exciting! I usually stick to our local college station, which is thankfully amazing (you can listen to it at wknc.org if you’re interested in checking it out). I used to have this little handheld shortwave radio that was a pain to tune, but could scratchily pick up stations from all over the world, and I never really knew what I was listening to or where it came from - I miss that thing! The idea of all of these global sounds surrounding us just waiting to be picked up is so wild to think about.

I think my favorite part of putting it together was stumbling across all these people talking about their niche fascinations, and the beauty they find in their little corners of the world.
