OLD SCHOOL THE MIXTAPE

This mix was inspired by a street interview with KRS-One where he emphasized the innovation and curiosity of youth alongside the wisdom and experience of elders… that each could teach and learn from the other. “When older people don’t listen to younger people, they become slower among older people, and when younger people don’t listen to older people, they become slower among younger people.” In fact, that is the key to our future, in leveraging the best of each and every generation. But we must be present and open to learning in ways we are not used to. As it relates to Hip Hop culture, we are at a bit of a tipping point. Are we going to engage the best of all generations of the culture, and celebrate and use it as an expansive and living archive of cultural wisdom, healing, and empowerment… Use our cultural armor? Or will we let it fall by the wayside to the societal and artistic margins with only a caricature of itself flourishing in mainstream popular culture? #hiphopisforus
