Cosmopolitan is one of the 77 classic cocktails of the International Bartenders Association and its first historically recorded recipe is in the 1934 book, Pioneers of Mixing at Elite Bars: 1903-1933 by Charles Christopher Mueller. Many argue that its creation is due to the gay community of Provincetown, Massachusetts, while others claim that it was made in the form we know today much later, namely in 1975 by bartender Neal Murray at the Cork & Cleaver steak house in Minneapolis.
