The answering machine was a common household device that allowed people to record messages when they could not answer the phone. Usually made of plastic with buttons for recording, playing, and rewinding messages, these machines sat beside the telephone and used small cassette tapes to store recordings. People could record a personal greeting, such as “Sorry, I’m not home right now,” and callers could leave a message after the beep.

Answering machines became an important part of everyday life because they made communication more convenient. Instead of waiting by the phone, people could go out and check their messages when they returned. Although the machines were fairly simple compared with today’s smartphones and voicemail systems, they were a useful piece of technology at the time.
