This is the mix.

This is the one that did it for me. That hooked me to psychedelic trance. All way way back in 2003. Morlack's premiere "Frequency Patterns" debuted on DI.fm's Goa/Psy channel and launched 10 years of Morlack mixes celebrating psytrance (and occasionally some old-school Goa trance), causing me to forsake all other forms of trance. Goodbye vocal, progressive, mainstream trance.

I'd post these rambling missives of inspired psychedelic prose on DI.fm's forum when the mixes (and the community) inspired me, all the while chair-dancing in my office with the speakers turned up to 11. (I have a private office, thankfully.) Morlack's fans would gather each month to tune into the latest mix.

I even developed a rapport with the DJ, communicating with him, discovering that he worked at Psyshop. He made recommendations, would stick extra things in my order. I even appeared in the dedication on one of his CDs.

But tastes change.

That old-school Goa trance grabbed more and more of my attention as I found the latest productions too formulaic. I missed the Indian-inspired melodies from the foundations of the music. But I wasn't the only one who changed. Morlack himself drifted away from psytrance, having found a new musical expression in funk—and that continues to this day, I believe.

And yet coming back to hear this transformative mix once more puts an enormous smile on my face. It reminds me of the community, the music, and the DJ. Those times come back to life with the first orchestral riff in this mix. They persist to the very end.

Thanks, Morlack.
