I always say i have jazz roots, but this is a classic example of me totally making shit up...unless you count The Johnny Cash Show, The Doris Day Show, The Partridge Family and The Donny & Marie Osmond Show that I grew up on as jazz. To be fair, I guess you could categorise Doris as a jazz singer of sorts; but between watching these shows on the box & religiously tuning into Casey Kasem's American Top 40 every Sunday (with my finger on the pause button of the tapedeck ready to add to my latest mix tape of 70's pop/soft rock & disco), I suppose my roots were the '70's & the closest I got to jazz at that time was probably the sax interlude on Gerry Rafferty's Baker Street, My mum took me to The Sweet when I was just 5 years old. From that point on, the rest is history. Now I'm into everything except anything too hard/trance/gabba. These days, I much prefer electronic music over most Indie/rock/guitar stuff. I also love classical music & have a valuable vinyl collection of 90's hiphop.
