In ayurveda many believe that all substances have ahamkara (roughly translated I Maker) this is the force that binds the soul or subtle body to a physical from. Loosely interpreted as the ego. When we engage with any substance food drink person music ect, if our ahamkara is weaker than theirs we can be influenced or even taken over by it. Alcohol has a strong ahamkara and also has been great disrespected and manipulated for profit and irreverent behavior by people so their is a karmic debt humanity owes alcohol ... It's pervasive quality is subtle and penetrating so it easily does it's work but do to our disrespectful over use it is less inclined to work for or with us. Instead it propagates it's own agenda
