Malice Mizer was a Japanese visual kei rock band active from August 1992 to December 2001. Formed by guitarists Mana and Közi, in 1995 they recruited Gackt as their new vocalist. Their earlier music and themes were characterized by their strong French and classical influences, later moving away from French romanticism and incorporating Gothic aspects. Malice Mizer was as famous for their music as for their live shows, featuring lavish historical costumes and stage sets, short silent theater pieces, and even a particularly notable instance of the vocalist Gackt descending to Earth as a fallen angel and ascend again at the end of the concert.
Gackt left the band in 1999 and was replaced by Kala. In 2001, it was announced that Malice Mizer would go on an indefinite hiatus. Later Mana formed Moi Dix Mois and Gackt has had a successful career as a musician, actor and film and stage director.
