Slinky: Winter Voodoo [December 2011]

The slinky is a metaphor for our elastic perception of time. Stretching and compressing effortlessly, do we measure its length by the constant distance around its spiral or the malleable number of meters it spans?

The duality fascinates me - this mix is a sonic exploration of the underlying concept. The tracks have all been significantly slowed and stretched across one another, changing the nature of the experience without altering the fundamental musical material. The results are eerier, spacier, sexier, with bigger gaps left for the imagination to fill. By the dictionary, slinky is "graceful and sinuous in movement."

Somewhat by surprise, I realized voodoo to be a common theme of the names of the tracks selected for this mix. But these are, in fact, sounds that reflect the stranger moods of winter, the sun slunk down low in the sky, flat light bending across the plane.
