Hymns & Voices

This is a great way to start off 2022. We have an excellent guest mix from Kevin, the man responsible for "Cello Mood Swings" and "Not Seeing a Flower" which you can find here...

For this mix Kevin collected a bunch of vocal and choral tracks & I mixed them together. Here's what he has to say about the mix:

"The idea came from listening to Jonsi and Alex - Boy 1904, I realized that quite a few ambient artists used the voice to create a type of auditory ambience. A few hymns have been added and a couple of more classical based choral works. These songs are not about words but the sounds of the voices and the emotions they provoke. They have been chosen for their haunting mournful beauty. I hope you enjoy them."

The tracklist is in the comments.

What a great idea! So here are some other suggested selections for folks who like this sort of thing and perhaps for a "part 2"? These feature mainly wordless or near wordless vocal parts.

I find the use of the voice in Mark Isham's soundtrack to the movie "Crash" quite effective. My favorite pieces are "Flames" (the vocal part that emerges halfway through) and "Sense of Touch" where that vocal track is more tightly focused upon.

Lisa Gerard regularly uses her voice in her work. I don't know all of her work, but at least two examples are the soundtrack from “Whale Rider” and her album “Immortal Memory”. I think “Elegy” from “Immortal Memory” is particularly lovely.

Peter Gabriel has used wordless vocals at times in powerful ways. One example is “Sketch Pad with Trumpet and Voice” from the “Birdy” soundtrack.

Terence Blanchard uses some pretty intense wordless vocals in his soundtrack for the “25th Hour” soundtrack, specifically in the opening and finale.

Michael Stearns has a lovely wordless vocal line in the opening selection, “Bali Girls” from his soundtrack to “Samsara”. In his “Baraka” soundtrack there’s Lisa Gerard’s vocal in “The Host of Seraphim” which I find quite powerful and heart-breaking.

Then there’s the deep bass nearly wordless vocals featured in Philip Glass’ “Powaqqatsi” and “Koyaanisqatsi”.

Wordless female vocals are used in Al Gromer Khan’s atmospheric “Monsoon Point”. Another ambient selection that makes heavy use of wordless vocals is Richard Bone’s “Vesperia”.

A whole distinct vocal instrument is harmonic singing, which I won’t even go into. However, one particularly beautiful example that straddles the edge of harmonic singing is “Warrior’s Return” by Tim Wheater from his album “Heart Land”.

Finally, one of the most sublime uses of voice that I have ever heard is near the end of Max Richter's Sleep--"Dream 0 (Till Break of Day)". After, literally, hours of strings and electronics to listen to as you are sleeping to then hear this simple soprano voice emerge--it absolutely evokes the sense of dawn and coming awake to the day in a way that moves me to tears whenever I hear it. It's my very favorite selection from that eight-hour work.
