TG 31 - Synthetic Sound. The area of electronic music known variously as synthetic, drawn, graphic, ornamental or animated sound, is explored in this Tone Generation, with a look at some of the experimental work carried out from the 1930s to the 1970s. Coupling opto-acoustic technology with motion picture film, its practitioners are acknowledged mainly in the world of cinema rather than music, and have often been overlooked when considering how electronic music developed in its formative stages. Helliwell plays a selection of soundtracks created with different synthetic sound techniques.
