The Fourth Sunday after Trinity

Today's Reading: Luke 6:36-42

Daily Lectionary: Proverbs 22:1-21; John 18:1-14

"Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. (Luke 6:37)

In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. "Judge not." That's the one Bible passage non-Christians know and can quote. Whenever you tell them they're doing something wrong, they say, "Judge not!" But maybe we should stop and consider why non-Christians quote that. Is it because we are judgmental? Is it because we're so often seen and heard to be judging others? To be sure, to speak God's truth against sin is not judging. It's God doing the judging. Yet how often are we not ourselves judgmental? That is, how often do we hold others to some standard we can't even keep ourselves? How often do we condemn them because we think we're better? How often do we hold on to their sins and not forgive them?
