Jewish holidays, observed by Jews throughout the year, have three principal sources: Biblical mitzvot (commandments), rabbinical mandate, and modern Israeli history.
Terminology. Shabbat (שבת) (Ashkenazi pron. from Yid. shabbos), or Sabbath, is referred to by that name exclusively. Similarly, Rosh Ḥodesh (ראש חוזש) is referred to by that name exclusively.
