Essentials- # 5 Personal Items

When I was deployed I found out that in austere environments is the little things that count. For me it was blankets. I slept in a sleeping bag for the first few weeks while I was there and then my family send me some blankets and some bed sheets. This made a huge difference. When you are making your emergency plan do not discount the personal items.Toilet paper: It’s easy to stock enough for a month. You should. This is one convenience that our western culture will not adapt easily to missing.Medications: Diabetics and heart patients should have enough forethought to know that running out of your insulin or digoxin can be a death sentence. Generally, if you are dependent on life sustaining medications you already know that you need to plan 2-3 weeks out. The modern convenience of battery operated pumps or monitors can become a wicked pain when batteries run low. Have an old school back up.  When you are faced with hour 1 of the power going out, and you know you have a 2 week back
