Weaving the Land

About the show

Playing tracks by

Sarah, Tim Dennehy, Lasairfhiona Ni Chonaola, Catriona Mckay & Chris Stout, Bob Delyn a’r Ebillion and more.

Weaving the Land is the first in a series of new mixes from Folk Radio UK. The mixes explore traditional music and its connection to the land. Whether it is recalling memories of it or the longing for return to the homeland.

The first one features many great artists that can be heard on Folk Radio UK including Irish poet Seamus Heaney.

Birch tree, smooth and blessed,
delicious to the breeze,
high twigs plait and crown it,
the queen of trees.

extract from 'Sweeney in Flight' by Seamus Heaney (1983)

Listening to this again, I think this might be one of FRUK's finest moments- Heaney (and O'Flynn's) work might unequalled depth, but for me, nothing in this selection puts a foot wrong.
I can imagine many other mixes on a similar theme (ordinary people can be separated from their own land on so many different levels) and my own selection might kick off with Chris Wood's The Flail.

Cheers Yorkshirelass!

Every single track is magic!

Two tracks are from that album, beautiful album and Seamus Heaney's poetry is rich like the peat soil his father dug.

Think this is from the album 'The Poet and The Piper' which you can get on CD
