Our “New meets Old” and “Songs not on Putin (or Trump’s) playlist” features make a comeback in this show, which features the latest piano miniatures and avant-electronica from Valentin Silvestrov and other Ukrainian musicians, plus an interview with early music specialist Catalina Vicens about her current US tour with Trio Mediæval, and the experience of performing both pre-Renaissance and contemporary music on an archaic portative organ. We contrast the avant-garde of pre-Reformation England with today's exploratory composers as we send our birthday wishes to Christopher Fox and Anna Clyne, and honor the 50th anniversaries of radical chamber works by Cage and Takemitsu. Some recent improvisational projects by Matthew Shipp and John Hollenbeck round out the playlist. Creative and improvised music from the Northwest and around the world with host Michael Schell, originally broadcast March 9, 2025. Playlist and photo credits in Comments.
