Flotation Device unwraps the premiere recording of a late Rzewski piano piece that echoes one of his most iconic compositions. Complementing that is a more somber piano miniature from Ryuichi Sakamoto that he recorded shortly before his death.
Plus, Matt Mitchell records with two different drummers, Julia Wolfe writes a string quartet for percussionists, and Evgueni Galperine, Finnur Karlsson & Joby Talbot explore the augmented reality of trumpet, accordion & cello. Kenyan electronicist KMRU returns with new fixed-media works, and Kaze with guest Ikue Mori demonstrate the pandemic-era art of remote collaboration, a technique honed a decade earlier by the Sound-In collective. Matthias Kranebitter and Ig Henneman commune with dead composers, Ivan Buffa reflects on Darmstadt-era pointillism, and his fellow Slovakian Viera Janárčeková connects Shakespeare with Sciarrino. Finally, Ken Vandermark and Mette Henriette contribute new takes on the art of transnational improvisation.
