Flotation Device honors the 50th anniversary of a momentous Stockhausen composition and the 60th birthday of Anthony Gatto, whose unusual adaptation of Flannery O’Connor bleak novel Wise Blood skirts the boundaries between opera and radio drama. We sample new improvised music from Tomas Fujiwara, Taylor Ho Bynum, John Zorn’s Chaos Magick, Timuçin Şahin’s Flow State and avant-metalites Der Finger plus Northwest dark ambient from Kerry Leimer, Climax Golden Twins and several hangers-on. We enjoy new works for harpsichord and for Hardanger fiddle, while a pair of London-based sound artists audition as rainmakers. A duet for flute and musical bow from Unexplained Sounds’ new anthology of contemporary South African music rounds out the playlist.
