Flotation Device dives into the second major Steve Reich release of 2022, featuring the LA Philharmonic in a pair of premiere recordings. We connect Lutosławski with Cage, Xenakis with dark ambient, Björk with Balinese techno, and Muhal Richard Abrams with Matt Shipp. Plus we sample new avant-fusion from Chicago and Belgium, and new avant-electronica from Iran, Indonesia and Seattle. A look back on a 2002 William Parker large ensemble project that’s just been released on CD (and which features Jin Hi Kim, Miya Masaoka and the late Billy Bang, among many others), and a look back at recent releases by the duo of Miles Okazaki and Dan Weiss rounds out the playlist. Creative and improvised music from the Northwest and around the world, with host Michael Schell.
