Flotation Device 2022-08-28 - The other Coltrane and John Adams

Avatar

Flotation Device previews two (yes two!) John Luther Adams albums, including the first sanctioned recording of his ambitious outdoor work Sila and a rare (for him) foray into electroacoustic dark ambient. We also honor what would have been the 70th birthday of the eclectic American composer Lee Hyla, and the 85th birthday of keyboardist, harpist, organist and swamini Alice Coltrane, with help from her husband John (heard unexpectedly playing bass clarinet rather than saxophone, and ending a tribute to a famous Baptist minister and activist with the recitation of a Buddhist mantra).⠀

Creative and improvised music from the Northwest and around the world with host Michael Schell. Originally aired August 28, 2022. Annotated playlist and photo credits with Comments.
