An assortment of fusion and East/West adventures come under the Flotation Device microscope in this show, along with a few choice English provocations. We celebrate the 50th anniversaries of Michael Tippett's controversial Third Symphony and Alice Coltrane’s sextet concert at Berkeley with Charlie Haden and Aashish & Pranesh Khan. We check out the latest in postmodern gamelan music from Dewa Alit via Black Truffle, a collision of pop drums and postminimalist mallets from Jlin and Third Coast Percussion, and new trio albums by Anna Gadt, Evan Strauss and Bagman (featuring Pat Thomas). Alice Kemp makes her Flotation Device debut with Songs of Erotic Mourning, while Farzan Salsabili explores a more cosmopolitan style of dark ambient via Unexplained Sounds’ new anthology of radical Iranian music. Composed, improvised and fixed-media music from the Northwest and around the world with Michael Schell, a global blossoming of contemporary Western art music and the border regions thereof.
